ABOUT THE BOOK
Founder of the Learning Agency and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, Boser had a question: How can we learn better?

What we learn may not be as important as how we learn.” – Ulrich Boser

Boser exhaustively researched the answer, and the result is his fascinating book, Learn Better. Sharing his personal struggles with academics — and his exploration of what works best for learning — the book is engaging, as well as informative and, at times, humorous. The book and the companion online course is suitable for educators, researchers, and students, alike.

Emphasize on learning, the right way

In addition to sharing how best to learn, Boser carefully dissects, and debunks, common myths about aspects of learning that most of us have bought in to for years: learning styles, highlighting text and using the multiple intelligence theory to facilitate learning, for example. Acknowledging the reality that rote learning no longer serves our 21st-century world, Boser emphasizes that what we learn may not be as important as how we learn.

Apply the concepts to all facets of daily life

Teachers, parents, and administrators can apply concepts of the book readily; for instance, a classroom instructor can use the guiding principles and six essential steps of “Value,” “Target,” “Develop,” “Extend,” “Relate,” and “Rethink” while designing a lesson plan. Does the lesson hold value to the student; do the students see the new knowledge as valuable to them? Or, are the students given time to “rethink” their prior learning, and build new neural passageways?

Boser has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Slate and Wired. Praise of Boser’s work on the science of learning has been universal. Amazon called the book ”the best science book of year.” NPR created a quiz on the myths of learning, based on his work. The book has also been featured in The Washington Post, US News and World Report, and the Atlantic.
